“By late afternoon, I’d collected two bobcats. I enjoyed the hunt, but the real treat was to be at the ranch, and with Dad. I looked forward to a couple of nights in the stone cabin, its straw roof layered over the vaulted rafters, cool Gulf air steering the sounds of pauraques and screech owls through the windows”
This is an important passage because Arturo Longoria explains the relationship the little boy had with his dad and with nature, the wilderness. How he likes to go hunting at the “El Cuervo” ranch and he always looks forward to spending the nights at the ranch an enjoy the sounds of different birds. This also relates to the relationship wilderness has with the humans, that they go hunting and spend time at their ranches enjoying the beauty of the nature.

Riprap and Cold Mountain Poems
“If I hide out at Cold Mountain living off mountain plants and berries- all my life, why worry? Days and months by like water, time is like sparks knocked off flint. Go ahead and let the world change- I'm happy to sit among these cliffs”.
This is a good example of how people now days should be. They shouldn’t worry about every little thing that goes on in their lives but instead enjoy every second of life they have been given. They should go to their happy place which for Snyder was his state of mind Cold Mountain and not have a worry in the world. “One follows his karma through” is also very important. Since he is alone he has no one else to worry about and no one else to affect so whatever he does will only affect him.

“Those that haunted our lake were so wary none was shot for years, though every boy hunter in the neighborhood was ambitious to get one to prove his skill”

In every family there is always a need for men to feel superior and to show their superiority and this passage shows exactly that. By saying that every boy hunter in the neighborhood wants to kill a loon which is described by Muir as a “brave, hardy, beautiful bird able to fly under water as well as about it”. This would help the boys to gain respect and popularity amongst peers.

The Maine Woods
“While my companions were seeking suitable spot for this purpose, I imporoved the little saylight that was left, in climbing the mountain alone.”
I think this quote from Henry Therou is very inspiring. He doesn’t want to waste anytime of the sunlight he has left to do the things he loves. I think this is an example that should be followed by a lot of us. We need to learn how to enjoy life at the moment because we might not be able to live another day. Every day should be enjoyed at its fullest by everyone and that is exactly what Henry does. He makes the most out of everything. He also knew his “companions” were not coming along with him which in a way brings here but excitement that he will be able to think for himself in peace, but also fear that it would be getting dark soon and he would be the only one out there with no protection for others. Therou should always be an example followed by all. Not only academically but ecologically too he loves nature and he loves to enjoy it at its fullest but he also cares for it and knows that without nature we wouldn’t live in such a beautiful planet. We wouldn’t have water to drink or oxygen to breath in.

Summer on the Lakes
“How happy that indians must have been here it is not long since theyt were driven away and the ground above and below is full of their traces.”
In this quote Margaret Fuller states the way she felt by visiting that amazing place. You could still feel the precense of the people that would settle there before. I think that feeling the precense of ancestors is magical as if you could almost feel there touch. It is like going to visit the ruins in Mexico. You don’t see people there but if you closs your eyes and relax you can picture them going on with life as if they were actually there. You can picture the way they dressed and the way the would behave with eachother just by a simple piece of wonderful architecture. When someone passes away you get that same feeling. You look at an object they used to love and you remember those times you spent together with that special person. Even though Margaret Fuller didn’t get to experience what it would be like to be around those indians she still felt their presence just by looking at her sorroundings.

Lewis & Clark
"We saw one of the largest collection of the burrowing or barking squirrels that we had ever yet seen; we passed a skirt of the territory of this community for about 7 miles...as we had not killed or eat anything today we each killed a burrowing squirrel as we passed them in order to make shure of our suppers..."
I think what this quote is meaning is that Lewis and Clark along with the rest of the explorers were just killing the animals they needed in order to survive, or until they could find something else to eat. They had to go long walks and their journey was really long and sometimes they weren't that lucky and they had to starve themselves because there just wasn't anything to eat and they had to go days without eating. But when they would find animals so they could kill them, they would only kill what they needed to fullfill their hunger.
